Medicines Formulations : The National Drug Pricing Authority has increased the prices of 11 formulations of 8 medicines by 50%. This decision has been taken due to the increase in the cost of making these medicines. The decision to increase the prices of drug formulations by 100 per cent was taken by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in a meeting with the National Drug Pricing Authority. Pharmaceutical companies were incurring losses
The maximum rates of these medicines were so low that the companies manufacturing and marketing them were incurring losses. Because of this, some companies had even stopped marketing them. After this, some companies had also appealed to NPPA to stop their marketing. Since these are very basic medicines, their supply was greatly affected and doctors along with the patients had to face many problems.
Which medicines’ rates increased?
The prices of medicines whose prices have been increased by NPPA include those used in the treatment of glaucoma, asthma, TB, thalassemia and mental health. The formulations whose rates have increased include Benzyl Penicillin 10 Lakh IU Injection, Salbutamol Tablets 2 mg and 4 mg and Respirator Solution 5 mg/ml. These medicines are used as first line treatment.

Safdroxil Tablets 500 mg
Atropine Injection 06 mg/ml
Streptomycin Powder 750 mg and 1000 mg
desferrioxamine 500 mg
